Choral Music

Sycamore High School Choral Ensembles are under the direction of Miss Maggie Mason.  Miss Mason received her B.S. in instrumental music from Lipscomb University and her M.Mu.Ed.in vocal music from Austin Peay State University.  She has been the choral director at SHS since 1998.  During this time, the choirs have been awarded excellent and superior ratings at events hosted by the Middle Tennessee Vocal Association and the American Choral Directors Association.  In addition, Lyric has been invited numerous times to sing the National Anthem at the TSSAA state basketball tournament.  Sycamore High School currently has the only high school level choral music program in Cheatham county.

 

The choral department at SHS focuses on the importance of learning music, sight-reading, stage presence, and performance skills.  In addition, students will learn leadership skills, teamwork, and the value of commitment. 

 

All choral members at SHS are expected to be positive ambassadors for the music department and the school and to strive for excellence in every rehearsal and performance.

 

Sycamore High School offers the following courses in Choral Music:

 

  • Treble Choir: This is a non-auditioned choral class open to any female singer. The class focuses on music reading skills, musical form and stylistic characteristics, as well as musical ensemble performance. Students are expected to match pitch, sing their own part, and to work consistently for improvement in sight-singing and musicianship skills.
 
  • Men's Ensemble: This is a non-auditioned choral class that welcomes any young man that would like to build a brotherhood of singing through the choral music tradition. The class focuses on developing a culture of singing through focus on the distinctiveness of the male voice, music reading skills, musical form and stylistic characteristics, as well as musical ensemble performance. Students are expected to match pitch, sing their own part, and to work consistently for improvement in sight-singing and musicianship skills. Members of this class will also occasionally perform with the Treble Choir and Advanced Women's Ensemble
 
  • Advanced Women's Ensemble - Audition and director approval are required for those female singers wishing to take this class. Advanced vocal and musicianship skills are the focus of this ensemble and the students are expected to match pitch, sing their own part with ease, excel in sight-singing skills, and present advanced level performances.
 
In addition, there are two after-school ensembles requiring audition to join:
  • Lyric - an eight-member a cappella women's group (students must also be enrolled in either Treble Choir or Advanced Women's Ensemble)
  • Zing - a twenty-four member mixed show choir (open to any SHS student)
